Gerald Clayton grew up surrounded by music, but his father was careful not to pressure him to play in the family band. He was good enough that he subbed occasionally in the Clayton Brothers and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, but it wasn’t until he had graduated from USC’s Thornton School of Music and was heading off to New York City that John made a formal offer. “When he graduated I said I expect you to do your own thing, but if you’d like to, that seat is open,” John recalls. “He said, ‘Are you kidding? It’s been my dream to play in the Clayton Brothers.’ That made his old man happy, but he’d never expressed that.”.
