It’s a pleasant surprise to see the soft-spoken Landis play two of the most pompous, megalomaniacal military men: Cathcart, who wears a hat full of feathers that grows grander as the play progresses. He reminds his officers several times that every time he makes a new decision, it’s another “feather in my cap,” then chortles at his cleverness. His second role, as Major Major, who has a fear about seeing people in person, and who climbs in and out of his office window wearing a bushy beard to escape talking to anyone, also is preposterously silly (and hilarious).

Also opening this past weekend was the world premiere of Min Kahng’s “The Song of the Nightingale” at Alameda’s Altarena Playhouse. This amazing young playwright is also a talented performer (last seen in Contra Costa in Danville’s “Reel Blondes”), musician and composer. He has taken this well-loved children’s tale and created a fanciful musical with wonderful melodies and lots of complexity to appeal to the adults in the audience as well as delight younger theatergoers.
